where do you live now? what do you all think of what's happening in your country? i was really thinking of going to grad school in the states this year but work gives me too much time to read and fret over grim economic forecasts. i mean i'm worried for southern ontario too but ottawa is government and if you threw the whole city in a fire the fire would reject it, and you could say "even the fire doesnt want it" like chief wiggum said about the butterfingers.
i woke up to 30 cm of snow and a transit strike that began at 12:01 a.m. small as the public support is for a strike in the middle of fucking december i assume it will get much worse when some winter biker dies or some old person is found frozen in a snowbank. this.fucking.place.

so you're in Ottawa?

I know lots of canadians working in the states right now. I think they're alright with it. They're all academics and don't fear for their jobs too much, although one guy's brother lost his architect job in nyc.

also, I changed the colors. you can change them again if you want, but I never liked that green and your post game me a good reason to get rid of it.

you guys wouldn't believe this strike..
union threatens to picket shuttles chartered by schools to get students to exams:
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/ottawa/story/2008/12/11/ot-081211-carleton-shuttle.html
cornellier: "what's wrong with inconveniencing people?" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bN9U9lSOpMo
interview the night before the strike: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lr9l8B-Z5Ms&feature=related

but anyways yeah i'm in ottawa. i think i'll take information science at u of T next fall, if i get in....i think i'll get in.
i really wanted to take American history or literature at a school in the US but it's so expensive even to apply, GRE prep tests and all that. plus i'll be leaving a permanent job at the government, i want it to be less likely i'll just end up like i was after my undergrad with no money and no choice but to move home.
lilass do you live in arizona? if not why do i think that?
what's it like in suburbs out there, i imagine big developments outside of phoenix etc all abandoned and awesome. maybe not though right?
also does anyone here like in new york? i'll probably be there in february.

mike (p.a.) said...

live in new york, i meant

todd said...

yes i live in arizona still.
uh. let's see. suburbia.
yes it's spread out
there's no urban development here
clinging to high towers or what have you
it's empty space
so they build outwards and outwards
in all directions from central hub
abandoned?
maybe if you mean in real estate mortgage talk?
phoenix builds out not up
and yes we scrawl out
i'm sure there's plenty of foreclosure mortgage craziness going on
houses that 2 years ago were worth 400,000
are worth 150,000
type of thing
i stay out of those areas
i couldn't see myself living in cookie cutter homes
i live close to asu campus in the artsy district bullshit
i am tired of it however
and strive to live in the post grad artsy distict
known as central phoenix
where 30 somethings can enjoy without worrying about the band of the week or what jeans they are wearing
someday
i will be there
where i belong
until then
i will appeal to the masses
and approve animal collective
snarf

just like every year
i wish you guys were coming it'd be hilarious

my office christmas party will be 30 minutes long and take place in the "library" on this floor, library like it has a few magazines related to stuff the branch works with. there are like hemp lifestyle magazines from the mid-90s, for example.
there will be some cheese and some crackers and probably like rabbit pate brought in by someone from quebec.
get me outta here.....

sus hows chicago?

mike (p.a.) said...

by which i mean how bout those Blackhawks? i hope you plan to see a game

susie said...

They beat the sens the other night.

Chicago is pretty great. Almost as cold as Ottawa, but even still. It's one of the best american cities.

susie said...

Proof that it's so great: I'm seeing Gremlins at midnight in a classic theater from the 20's.

todd said...

that's awesome. there's an indie theatre by my house that does that stuff. or at least used to. rocky horror midnights and old school movies. being drunk and yelling shit. yeah.
