SXSW 09....it begins

SXSW Music officially starts tomorrow. I have worked an insane amount the past two weeks so that I could take the entire length of SXSW Music off from work and I finished that up 3 hrs ago. I am now drinking a Lone Star Tallboy and am giddily planning out my first day of shows. Truth be told, this shit started on Saturday night and I have already been to two parties and seen 8 bands, including Evangelicals last night at the Decider party at Mohawk who just kicked the hell out of me with their show. I loved them. If I don't leave SXSW 09 with them in my top two or three shows, I will be seeing some amazing shows this week, because they were phenomenal last night. So loud and so so entertaining. Their bass player played all of these crazy ass Peter Hook-ish lines and was a real treat to watch. My sister, who flew in from NYC for the week, commented that all he did was rip the bass and sing ooo-ooo-ooo from time to time. Highly recommended if you get the chance to check them out. Tomorrow I have M. Ward, Port O'Brien, Tallest Man On Earth, Megafaun, Evangelicals (again), King Khan & The BBQ Show, The Drones, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, The Thermals (really excited to see them), Wavves, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Vetiver, The Mae Shi, Here We Go Magic, Marnie Stern, Abe Vigoda, and Lovvers all on my radar. Obviously I won't get to see all of them, but I'm sure I'll catch the majority of tthem, plus a ton more this week. I've already started posting some shit about what I've seen so far over at my blog. I'll attempt to continue doing so the rest of the week if anyone wants to keep up. Any recommendations? Tips on who not to waste my time seeing? I'm so excited!!!

another year not there. i'm way too far behind the curve anyway. such a great time when you know what's what in the up-and-coming scene. my fondest memories: seeing broken social scene at 33 degrees while pumping them beers from the keg. iron and wine at waterloo, quietest crowd ever. seeing the pee wee fist at some theater with like six people there, amps and mics off. seeing animal collective my one and only time in the fox and hound parking lot right before kenya and they played songs from feels. needs new body.

God I still miss 33 degrees. I seem to recall running into you at a show there during SXSW many years ago, but I can't think of who it was. I'm thinking maybe Clearlake played, but I don't think that was who I was there to see. I don't know how long it's been since you've been to Austin, but this place is almost unrecognizable in some areas it has grown so much. I had dinner tonight at a restaurant over by where 33 degrees used to be and was pretty shocked at how different the are seemed.

oh yeah, i did meet you at 33 degrees once during sxsw. i don't remember who was playing either. i haven't been to austin in a long time, not since the night of that AC show actually. by the time i finished college i was starting to prefer the mexican simplicity of (inside the loop) san antonio. but always great to be a mere hour or so from austin for shows.

i saw evangelicals a few months ago, i agree they put on a great show. i bet the mae shi will be fun, i'd be interested in a report.

i found out some other people i know from guelph are down there, if you see Nick Diamonds' new band Human Highway on any schedule or whatever you should try to check it out, cuz they'll be playing with THE MAGIC who are ontario's best band. i looked up the myspace but it doesn't say where they're playing, only that it's today (18th) making this probably too late.

oh man i just looked up human highway's show and they're playing with THESE ARE ARE SNAKES! 11pm -on tonight at "red eyed fly." maybe the magic aren't playing i assumed they would be cuz most of that band plays in human highway. there are however four other bands with the word magic in their names including Magic Christian a band that has Clem Burke and some other famous dudes in it. they were in ottawa not so long ago but i missed it, heard it was awesome though.

Today I saw the following:

Here We Go Magic - so so good. seriously everyone check this band out now.

The Shaky Hands - good rock band, lots of rock bands this year, seems like loud ass guitars are in style again

The Paper Chase - Holyshitholyshitholyshitholyshit. I hadn't seen them in forever and I forgot that John Congleton is a god.

Horse Feathers - Nice Iron and Winey quiet folk group. I liked them. Sort of suffered the same fate as Wooden Birds the other night

Thao and The Get Down Stay Down - excellent.

Marnie Stern - AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!! I love this chick, she fucking shreds and looks like she is having a such a good time on stage. It was her birthday today too. The whole band destroys.

The Thermals - Dude was wearing a speedo looking thing but they were awesome as usual.

Motel Motel - literally caught one song, not bad. Nothing to write home about.

Top 3 sets so far are definitely Evangelicals/Marnie Stern/The Paper Chase

I'm beat and probably staying in tonight. More mayhem tomorrow including the Gorilla Vs. Bear party (hopefully) and a ton of other shit.

I'll keep an eye out for Human Highway, I don't have a badge/wristband, so I can only get into the Free/RSVP shit.
