happy holidays

merry christmas you silly sons of bitches.

i miss the personae that i've created for each of you in my mind, based on our over-the-internet interactions. it's like we're all growing up and each moving in the direction of our own burgeoning lives. so sad and yet exciting.

here is the part in which i talk about the past year and compare it to a whirlwind, explaining how it was easy to fall out of touch.

i hope everyone is well and staying warm (or enjoying the mildness of a southern winter).

let's do what we really come here to do: share our recent favorite music (new and old), and talk about the big new happenings in our lives.

in terms of being on top of new music, 2009 has been the worst for me of the entire decade. probably because i've gone through serious obsessions with bob dylan and john lennon and smokey robinson and mj..

i really haven't gotten into much music released in 2009, besides the obvious favorites-

animal collective
phoenix
grzzly bear
woods
etc.

but ive also been blessed to know some lesser-known artists who have made some incredible music that i think is honestly worthy of talking about alongside any of these big names. namely these two, with which ive been utterly obsessed:

natureboy
quiet loudly

really check them out! i think the natureboy record is easily one of the best of the year, and in no way just because of my proximity to her.

Has anyone listened to the new Lake album, "Let's Build a Roof?" It's a solid album, sweetly relaxing, catchy, with some surprises on instrumentation. I'm surprised I haven't heard more about this album.

you're right trout it's pretty good , i miss old lake though did you ever hear the kelp monthly #24, release? or the tape?

they're awesome people especially, and i'll probably always be a fan of them.

i've gotten into not that new stuff... I'm not really into the animal collective / grizzly bear stuff, maybe I let the wrong people ruin stuff for me or something, all the production for it sounds really boring and thin to me though.

R. Stevie Moore is a god.

and

brown interior tapes: (download the fresh mixtape, it's a goodie, fisher j. price is sweet too) (http://www.browninteriormusic.com)

the guy that runs that label is always doin a carter family tribute field recording project, the lake track is especially awesome: http://cartertribute.blogspot.com

our record label boy gorilla, is kind of on indefinate haitus as a record label, though the coffee cart I started downtown is named after it. Also two record label's came out of the collective: highscoresandrecords(.com) and braverecs(.com)

the typhoon (http://www.myspace.com/wearetyphoon) album is almost done, getting released in may by tenderlovingempire(.com) i'm pretty stoked on how that's going (i play one of two drum sets) we are likely going to play a ton at SXSW so i'll let you austinians know bout it.

yay deuce

i did not die in japan, although at one point it was so surreal we thought we did.

for me this year i have enjoyed
built to spill
black heart procession
holopaw
blakroc
grizzly bear
department of eagles
if you combined swan lake and sunset rd's album it'd be good

i went to denver for a few days saw family it was so nice
i miss that town

i heard that the new beach house is amazing but i haven't listened yet

i'm excited for a new she and him come march
also a new final fantasy game to waste away with in march

someone told me the other day to check out pale air singers, any thoughts?

no more smoking, get in better shape, get a traditional japanese back-chest-buttocks tattoo, write songs, draw stuff, not a lot of drinking, be nice to people, those are most of my resolutions

i miss you all
i wonder about you all
i hope all is well with you all

hey y'all. I miss you!

I don't have much to add in the way of 2009 music because I'm officially old and only listen to the likes of Sam Cooke. but I will try your recommendations because I trust you.

pieter, let me know if your band ever plays Chicago. I'm still here and I would definitely drag my old ass out to hear it.

todd, I met your friends at Pitchfork, which I'm sure you know. They were nice! But I wish I had been able to meet you instead.

In fact, if any of you ever come through Chicago and don't get in touch with me, I'll be hurt forever. I've recently been in a couple of conversations where someone will ask if anyone has any strictly-online friends, and I always proudly say that I do.

skyler, where are the cameras?

xoxox.s.

oh shit
the cameras?!?!?!?

don't get me started

2010 is said to be good for me
so says me horoscope

however i spent nye on my couch with antibiotics

a tequila fest followed by a christmas party (a hardcore one) followed by a trip to denver took out my immune system

so far 2010 looks pretty dorky to me, we'll see

susan, i'll try and see you this summer, i want to go to wrigley field, i might do san francisco this spring

hope everyone had a better nye than i did

todd-
glad you didn't die. how was it? is that all we get... "so surreal"? i won't make it to japan except for a layover at narita in feb. i went to the philippines this summer since a week there cost about as much as a day in japan. going to cambodia later this month for a whopping 26 days... can't wait.

trout-
thanks for the list. i've actually listened to about half those. yup, that grizzly bear album is pretty cool. i heard the dirty projectors one for the first time about a week ago and i was impressed. i listened to the bowerbirds last night and it was great... i'll spend some time with it. p.s. be seein' ya soon but might surprise my folks so don't tell. let's go eat not korean food.

i would add to my list
califone
and
warm heart of africa by the very best

hi sus, i will let you know if i'm ever in chicago.

i have many pictures from this year abroad here: picasaweb.google.com/rgreen8314

i'm going snowboarding on monday, y'all.

i'm feeling a deuce resurgence.

todd said...

Wow, I haven't checked this shit in a while and look at all this activity.

Here's my annual top 25, many of which you all have covered already.

http://mylifewith.tumblr.com/post/317152518/top252009

This year has been good. I got a decent promotion at work, so I have fancy socks and whatnot now. I have made friends with a bunch of the people who work for SXSW year round and may have weasled my way into a free platinum badge for this year, that would be sweet.

The Flaming Lips play here the week before SXSW and I am excited for all of the fake blood and lunacy. My roommate and his girlfriend are getting married this summer, so they moved out and I now live by myself for the first time in my life. It is weird and wonderful all at the same time. My house backs up to a farm with a Cow (Lunch) and a Horse (Sassafras) so I guess I live with the animals.

I also have a kegerator, that I purchased with my roommates, but now I have no roommates so I just live in a bar pretty much.

That's about it.
